about
'Zancudo' is the second single from The Valery Trails' fourth album, The Sky Is Blue, due out on August 12th.
The song (which premiered on US website The Big Takeover) possesses an immersive wash of propellant drumming and cascading jangling guitars, There's a push and pull tension to the verses, building and gently churning before the swirling Byrds-like guitars and the strings of Filip Magnusson blossom gloriously into the aether. Tim Steward (Screamfeeder) and Skye Staniford again contribute guitar and backing vocals respectively.
Andrew wrote the song after a spontaneous trip to Costa Rica (pre-pandemic) where he and his family rented a beachside cabin in Playa Zancudo, an intriguing little fishing community way down near the Panama border. "The song is an exercise in capturing the spirit and mood of a place and its people. I’m always drawn to “end of the earth” locations, partly because you meet interesting people there who tend to have fascinating stories about how they got there, so I wanted to try and write about that."
lyrics
It isn’t easy to get here
Where the driftwood lands on black sand
Where the water is around you
Where the memories expand
And every night the sun goes down
We watch it sink into the sea
And I don’t know what brought you here
And I don’t know what set you free
It must be easy to live here
If you’ve left it all behind
You must have everything you need
I hope you find your peace of mind
I don’t know what set you free
